Why is India re-focusing on Chahbahar port after initial hesitation?

The first tri partite working group meeting between Nadia, Iran and Uzbekistan was held on Monday with the aim of

using the Chahbahar port jointly to enhance trade, transport and regional connectivity between the three countries.

Statement from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said that the three countries involved in the meeting discussed the use of Chahbahar port. The statement said that the three sides also appreciated the role of the port in providing humanitarian assistance during the COD 19 epidemic.

The meeting also appreciated the Indian proposal to hold 'Chah Bihar Day' in 2021.

With this move, it seems that India is once again focusing on the Chahbahar project.

By connecting throughC hah-e-Bihar, India will be able to further strengthen its reach in Afghanistan. India will be able to reach Afghanistan directly from Chahbahar port without passing through Pakistan and thus will not be dependent on Pakistan for the ongoing Indian operations in Afghanistan.

India has been sending wheat and other goods to Afghanistan through the Chahbahar port for some time.

India cannot leave Bihar and Iran," says Qamar Agha, a strategic affairs expert

india was a little hesitant to take a decision in the meantime and that is why the project was delayed," he said. But now the government feels it is in danger of slipping out of its hands. India is also active in Iran in view of Chinese investment.
